Mold Inspections

5/3/2022 (Permalink)

When operating a commercial building, it’s imperative to designate the role of mold inspection to either a building manager or custodian to ensure that if or when mold arises, it’s remediated as soon as possible.

The regular impact on the environment and age of the building should determine how often a mold inspection takes place. But as a standard practice, you do not need to test for mold unless you can see or smell it.

Should you have a mold outbreak in your commercial building, we recommend a yearly inspection once it is remediated.

It’s essential to stay on top of mold occurrences as more than 50 million people in the U.S. suffer from allergies and are prone to significant illness when introduced to mold.

Remember, the faster mold is identified and remediated, the quicker employees can get back to work to resume the operations of your business.

SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms  is here for all commercial building owners and occupants 24/7 to answer all questions and respond to critical incidents.

Learn how to treat a minor mold problem in your home

3/28/2022 (Permalink)

If you just noticed minor spots of mold arise inside your home, chances are it’s just located on the surface of the wall.

First off, no matter how big or small the mold problem, the root cause needs to be addressed, whether that be a water leak, poor ventilation, excessive condensation, etc.

Once the root problem is remediated, and it has been confirmed that the mold is only located on the surface of the wall, there’s a simple solution you can make with a household cleaner that may remove the mold.

Regular household chlorine bleach and water is known to eliminate minor mold problems around your home. The solution can be made by mixing one cup of bleach with one gallon of water.

Once the two contents are mixed, grab a rag, dip it into the solution, and scrub the surface.

Remember, if your home experiences an incident causing major water damage, it only takes 72 hours for mold to begin spreading throughout your home, which can cause extensive damage to your home.

If you’re unsure if a mold problem in your home is a minor or significant case, it’s always best to consult with professionals to determine the severity; in the meantime, restrict access to the area with mold for pets, children, and yourself. SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms can help you remediate your potential mold issue.

Three reasons why property owners should have their windows cleaned

3/28/2022 (Permalink)

One of the most overlooked areas around a property that often goes without proper care is its windows.

We understand that with so much going on, it may not be a priority to you, but in the long run, having your property’s windows cleaned at least once or twice per year will increase their longevity and save you money.

While we often go through extreme seasonal weather, such as snow, rain, wind, and heat, bacteria can build up on and around the windows with hard water spots, slowly damaging their functionality.

A primary reason why you need to have your property’s windows cleaned routinely is for optical reasons, because who wants to live in a house or work in a commercial building with grimy windows? It’ll block out the natural sunlight that gives you energy and encourage you to keep the windows closed more often, and who wants to live like that?

Remember, your friends at SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms are here for you 24/7 to answer all questions and respond to emergencies.

Are your home’s water pipes frozen? Follow these three simple tips.

3/28/2022 (Permalink)

One of the most dreadful experiences of any homeowner is a busted water pipe.

We see many busted pipes during the cold winter months that could have been prevented if cared for proactively and properly.

Here are three recommendations to prevent frozen and busted water pipes in the future.

Running faucets

One of the simplest ways to prevent pipes from busting is to let faucets run on cold days. No, you don’t need to let them run 24/7, but routinely let them run for about 20 minutes a handful of times per day when the weather is below 40 degrees.

Warm your home

Another proactive way to prevent pipes from busting is to keep the colder areas of your home warm. This can be accomplished with space heaters (do not leave them on overnight) to elevate the overall temperature of your home, thus indirectly and slightly elevating the temperature of the water inside the pipes, alleviating the pipes from pressure.

Disconnect water hose

Disconnecting your water hose from the faucet on days where temperatures are under 40 degrees will prevent water from being trapped in the hose and the pipe, which is the most popular cause of busted water pipes in the winter.

Disconnect your water hose on cold days. It’s so simple, and it’ll save you money.

Maintenance for your Commercial Building

2/8/2022 (Permalink)

What causes water damage in our Commercial buildings? Most people would answer this question with “a busted water pipe”. While that can cause a water damage, simple maintenance items are the top causes of water damage in a commercial space.

According to JobsGroup the top 6 causes of water damage are:

Damaged roof components. Many commercial buildings have a flat roof that needs to be inspected regularly to look for cracks, weak spots, etc. that can easily break down during a moisture event, causing leaks that may not be detected before major damage occurs.

Damaged pipes and sprinklers. These systems, especially in older buildings need to be inspected for weak spots, corrosion, etc. Again, slow leaks can lead to major damage over time.

Old HVAC systems. The older the systems get, the more apt they are to cause damage. A simple clogged line can cause lots of damage over time.

Window damage. In large commercial buildings we sometimes overlook cracked or minor broken windows which can be a source for moisture to get into the building, causing significant damage over time.

Poor waterproofing maintenance. It is important to create and maintain an impermeable water barrier to avoid damage from water intrusion. Some sources of this could be sprinkler systems for landscaping seeping into a building without proper waterproofing.

If you are in charge of maintenance for any commercial building, these 5 area’s should be on a routine maintenance checklist.

How Mold gets into your Property

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

Roof and foundation leaks are the top sources of moisture building up in houses, which could lead to mold and mildew.

Other ways mold can creep into your home include but are not limited to entering through doorways, windows, vents, air conditioning, and heating systems.

It’s so imperative to routinely inspect your roof for cracks or leaks and all the spaces noted above that have the potential to welcome and build mold — especially the restroom, where black mold can easily build up without proper ventilation.

If you spot or suspect mold in your home, do NOT hesitate to give us a call. Our team of restoration professionals is available to you 24/7 with a plan of action to minimize the damage to your property.

Preparing for the Storm

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

Many parts of the country have already experienced severe thunderstorms this winter and we've noticed a pattern - many people are not adequately prepared.

People often delay gathering goods to assist them through a thunderstorm, and sometimes it just doesn't seem like a big deal - until you're the one sitting in the dark wishing you would have prepared beforehand.

Our professionals at SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms highly recommend preparing in advance for emergencies, including thunderstorms.

If you have a moment today, grab a small basket and fill it with essential items like:

  • Flashlights
  • Candles
  • Matches
  • Lanterns
  • Portable phone chargers

When you know a thunderstorm is approaching your region, pay attention to your local weather service announcements; they'll keep you in the know about the severity of the storm.

Also, it's imperative to designate a room in your home as a safe space in the event of a thunderstorm. This space should be located away from windows or anything made of glass - should winds be over 40 miles per hour.

Finally, ensure that large trees in your yard or even your neighbor's yard are wind resistant, loose branches are cut, and trees are trimmed; for the safety of your family and home.
